Fewer engine parts does not mean no risk
A battery electric car has no combustion engine, but the battery, power electronics, cooling, suspension, tyres and electronics still need attention. Assess the condition of the actual car rather than assuming every used EV is a safer purchase.
Ask for evidence of battery condition
- Request available battery health diagnostics and understand how the result was measured.
- Check service history and investigate warning messages or incomplete repairs.
- Verify battery and vehicle warranty eligibility, remaining limits and transfer rules.
- Arrange an independent inspection appropriate for an electric vehicle.
Test the charging and the everyday equipment
Check that charging starts and ends normally, and inspect the charging port and supplied equipment. On a test drive, assess air-conditioning, brakes, suspension, steering and electronic features. Battery health alone is not a complete vehicle inspection.
Compare value after purchase
Allow for tyres, insurance and repairs alongside the purchase price. Ask how replacement parts and warranty work are handled locally. Confirm the remaining registration period and relevant vehicle details through official records.
Take your time with uncertain claims
Treat “like new battery” or an unusually low price as a reason to ask more questions. Written evidence is more useful than a seller’s reassurance.
Understand battery and warranty terms →Used electric cars Singapore: buyer questions
What should I check before buying a used EV in Singapore?
Inspect battery condition, warranty transfer, charging operation, service and accident records, software support and the remaining COE. A smaller number of engine components does not remove all vehicle or ownership risks.
Can I rely on the advertised battery health alone?
Ask how the figure was obtained, when the test was performed and what it measures. Compare it with the remaining warranty, inspection findings and an actual charging and driving test. Request an independent inspection when important details are uncertain.
